E-mail tips for travelers
Going on vacation? Want to check your e-mail using someone else's computer? Here's how!!
Free link Category various Web-based, e-mail forwarding, and POP e-mail web-based e-mail e-mail forwarding * e-mail forwarding * POP access ** POP access ** If your ISP provides you with a shell account This option is not free--but for people who travel a lot, it makes e-mail much easier. You sign up with an ISP who has partnered with IPASS (or, there are others), a roaming internet connection. Then before you travel, you look up local numbers in the various destination cities and dial-in to a local (ipass supporting) ISP.* What is e-mail forwarding?
E-mail forwarding is a "pseudo e-mail address" that allows one to send all incoming mail to another location. For example, I use "ed-kearn@gateman.com", an address which allows me to forward my e-mail to wherever my "real" e-mail POP mailbox is located. I have changed ISPs several times and don't have to inform the whole world of my new address. Instead, I just point my usa.net address to my new location.
Advantages? Well, again, I don't have to "un-subscribe" and "subscribe" to all my various maillists which send me information, as well as not having to inform my friends. Also, if I go on vacation, I could forward all mail to a known e-mail address, say that of a friend, where I could get my e-mail. (Instead, however, I use POP access) ------------>** What is POP access?
POP access allows you to retrieve your POP (post office protocol) mail by essentially logging in from another internet connection to your current internet provider.
It requires you to enter:
- Your e-mail login name
- Your mail server (i.e., mailhost.networksplus.net [or such])
- Your login password
...and then retrieve your mail from your ISP.
NOTE: Most ISP's allow this, but a few may not. It won't work with AOL, and also won't work if your e-mail is behind a (corporate or educational) firewall.
PP.SS. Be sure to sign off and clear the cache when using someone else's computer.
